I am extremely glad to announce launching of a website on Hybrid Rice in India by the Directorate of Rice Research (DRR), Hyderabad, which is coordinating the hybrid rice program in the country.

The isolated and academic efforts during eighties on hybrid rice in India were channalized into a goal oriented, time bound, mission mode network project by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi during December 1989. This ICAR project was further strengthened through the generous financial assistance by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the technical support provided by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and Food and Agricultural Organization of United Nations (FAO). Mahyco Research Foundation (MRF), a private non-profit research foundation, has also partially supported some of the project activities.

Remarkable progress in development of hybrid rice technology has been made in India over the last 12 years. First rice hybrids have been developed and introduced to Indian agriculture in 1994. So far 13 public and three private sector hybrids have been released for general cultivation by the Central and State Variety Release Committees. Seed production of about 5-6 hybrids is being taken up on large scale, predominantly by the private seed sector. About 3500-4000 tons of hybrid seed is being produced annually and it is estimated that around 200,000 hectares are planted to hybrid rice annually in India.

It is envisaged to depict the progress made in various components of hybrid rice technology such as technology generation, large scale seed production as well as transfer of technology in India, on this website. Besides, it is also planned to include significant aspects of progress made on hybrid rice globally. All other related information and events of interest will also be on this website. Please send your views and suggestions, as well as information, if any, for improvement of this website so that its usefulness can be enhanced. The site will be updated every month and your useful suggestions and information given will be incorporated. E-mail addresses for contacts have been given in this website under "Contact us".

We are grateful to the UNDP, not only for their generous support for the hybrid rice program in India over the years, but also for specifically suggesting and sponsoring to launch this website on hybrid rice in India.
